This past weekend I was in a total DIY mood so I decided to see what I had in my apartment that could use a makeover. I had some gold spray paint leftover after a craft session with my team at work. Yep, you read that right. Sometimes we craft and drink wine after hours. It’s great!
This is from our last paperflower making session for an event we did. Living downtown San Francisco, I don’t exactly have a driveway or backyard to do projects in, so I haven’t been doing a lot of painting and especially not spray painting. A while back, I was down in the basement taking out the trash and I discovered a little “concrete garden” right outside my the backdoor. It’s a pretty narrow path, but it’s clean, outside with fresh air, bright and even has a little “vegetable garden” so it’s my new project spot!
I had some simple white and black IKEA frames that I wanted to spruce up and figured some spray paint would do the trick. It’s a super easy project, but it adds just enough pizazz to make a difference. Read more about the how and what prints I got from Minted here.
What you’ll need:
Take the frames apart and lay them out on the old newspaper. Measure up how far out you want the gold corners. Use a pencil to make a small mark on both sides. Start taping up the corners first and then tape the rest of the frame. Make sure you don’t have any bubbles or holes in the tape, especially at the start and finish. You want a clean gold line when you pull the tape off. I had some black frames laying around as well, so I painted those too, but I haven’t found the right prints to put in them yet. Any suggestions? Get the gold spray can ready and shake it well before you paint. Start of slow and don’t hold the spray too close. Pretend like you’re still doing paint strokes but with the spray. That way it should evenly distribute and you won’t have any running. Once you’re done, let them sit for at least one hour before you take the tape of. Take some pictures for Instagram and relax while the paint dries. Slowly remove the tape and tadaaaa! It should look something like this. Both prints are from Minted and you can find the specific ones from my kitchen update.
